Methane Conversion R&D Project

Project objective

The objective of the project is to develop and build an industrial plant based on PCH’s proprietary technology for the production of hydrogen, ethylene and other marketable hydrocarbons. The plant is intended to use renewable energy and operate without a carbon footprint or other harmful emissions.

Technology development

The project is aimed at developing an industrially viable and highly efficient technology for converting methane or natural gas into high-value products, primarily ethylene and hydrogen.

The development programme combines advanced process modelling with experimental work at a dedicated laboratory unit. The unit is used to validate the core process, determine actual operating conditions and influencing factors, and generate experimental data to improve the accuracy and reliability of the process models.

Current laboratory trials focus on optimising operating conditions, assessing their effect on conversion and reaction selectivity, and evaluating the proposed technology.

Scale-up and industrial deployment

The next stage is to prepare the design basis and develop a basic process design package for a pilot industrial unit operating within an existing industrial facility.

The pilot unit will be used to test and, where necessary, refine the process and engineering solutions, while confirming operating parameters, product yields, equipment configuration and the operating flexibility of the technology.

The resulting data will support the preparation of a commercially deployable design and engineering package for the construction of a full-scale industrial facility.

Project implementation

The technology is being developed as a modular solution that can be scaled for industrial use. Its economic potential lies in combining natural gas processing with the production of key petrochemical feedstocks and low-carbon hydrogen.

The experimental programme is creating a structured database. The results are processed and used for process modelling and the preliminary engineering of the pilot industrial unit, including confirmation of operating parameters, product yields and equipment configuration.

PCH is implementing the project in cooperation with scientific and educational institutions and engineering companies.
